I can be a great optimist and my own worst critic so my reply contains both of these elements:

I found that my post on Lady Gaga was hugely successful as have some others that contained either keywords like this or current affairs topics.

That said, whilst this achieved a good deal of viral noise, I doubt that many of the readers would have been the right demographic to take any further interest in what I do.

Nonetheless, from the 'interweb haystack', one or two 'needles' were acquired, so on balance, my intuitive strategy seems to work ! :-)

As a 'citizen journalist', I think this is a very important post. One must be able to say new things in new ways and sometimes old things in new ways if your writing is to be read by others.

This just arrived as I am writing next week's blog about Greece. Very timely.

Ellie:

I write hybrid content. I keep a fodder file on information I believe my tribe will enjoy, retool it to an original format, but then I also write about some new ideas that pop into my head based on what I am observing. The key however for me is I have established a pipeline of posts like an editorial calendar since I believe too many bloggers wake up in the morning and say oh s**t, I haven't posted in awhile, then they dash out some #2.

So who won the prize and what was the prize, an evening of jazz in NYC?

In a pull marketing world, we can be as clever as we want with seo, but ultimately it is the customer who decides whether they find us and then use us.

I get lots of spurious visitors simply because my website has sex in the title :-)( - the www is a random world where accidents (good and bad) can occur.

Thanks for this post Ellie.

Hey, Jim. Always glad to have your thoughts. today they make me realize that I wasn't as clear as I wanted to be on this post. What motivated it was how people were finding other recent posts. I have good analytic software in place that lets me see that information and it can be quite helpful in creating and optimizing future content. Yes we put our blog info into categories and we tag specific references to people and companies and concepts mentioned in the posts so that the folks who are typing queries into search engines on those topics can find what we're producing. What I wanted to get across is that rather than trying to game the system on how to get to Google page one, we should pay attention to how people are actually looking for information that brings our content up on page one -- maybe not how we think they're looking for it.

When it comes to finding qualified specialists, I think that all traditional networking activities are very much on the table. I just attended a networking group today and will attend another on Thursday and I network all the time on social media - you and I being a case in point -- however we're in a world of 'trust and verify'. Anytime I'm recommended by a networking contact, I assume that I'm going to be googled and vetted online before a call is made. When the phone rings today with a biz opportunity, I know I'm well on the way to being hired because they've already checked me out online. Hope this clarifies the original info!

Anita, thanks so much for checking in. You've asked a great question. A blog won't necessarily generate sales as a stand-alone effort. In Inbound Marketing -- which is a much larger process -- blogging has the role of driving traffic (which it does if you blog consistently), establishing thought leadership and creating an avenue to begin engaging with a community of people who are interested in your topic (as you and I are doing here and which will continue through your subscription). There are other Inbound Marketing activities dedicated to converting traffic and blooming relationships to leads and sales. What guides, informs and measures the success of various IM efforts are integrated, closed-loop analytics.

Doing just one piece of Inbound Marketing isn't Inbound Marketing at all. I don't reject calling and magazine articles as a part of the marketing mix. But let's face it, given voice mail, shrinking magazine ad revenues and other changes in traditional marketing and media as technology offers other options, do you think it pays to start employing new strategies and tactics that represent where we're going, rather than where we've been? BTW...I welcome having this conversation!! Thank you again and I hope this is helpful if you're trying to influence your management to take a step forward!
